Welch and Palmer, both who had been previously married with children, first met at a party in 1996. Their friendship later blossomed into a romance, and the pair were engaged by 1999. Welch said of their meeting, “I was fascinated when I met him,” she shared. “I thought he was an actor because he was really handsome, and I thought, "Oh, God, this is never going to work because he’s an actor. I’m an actress so I know. I can’t have two of this going on."" Welch and Palmer were married until 2004, when the pair announced their plan to separate.
