Description
Carafe with Order of the Garter and Motto J. P. Emberton, France or England, E. 19th century Colourless glass with ball at the bottom. On the bulbous wall in gold-heightened, impasto enamel painting, borders and hanging ornaments. Frontal coat of arms of the Order of the Garter with armour and crossed battle axes surrounded by a blue ribbon with inscription: ''PROBITAS VERUS HONOS''. Underside signed ''J.P. Emberton'' in crimson. H. 26 cm. In combination, the motto means something like: ''Honesty is true honor.'' It emphasizes the importance of integrity and sincerity as noble virtues.
