Description
Perth - A 21-piece harlequin set of Victorian silver flatware, with 6 earlier additions, Edinburgh Assay Office marked, 'Kings' pattern, single struck, comprising 10 table forks and 6 dessert spoons, mark of George Crichton, 1861 and 5 tablespoons, mark of Robert Keay II, 1847, together with 6 teaspoons, mark of Adam Elder, Edinburgh, tandem marked by Robert Morton, 1828, 1392.2g (44.7ozt) gross (27) Following the reimposition of duty in 1784, Scottish provincial goldsmiths were obliged to send all their work to Edinburgh to be assayed and have the duty mark applied. These examples from Perth-based goldsmiths were therefore struck with Edinburgh, rather than Perth, town marks. Robert Morton was a jewellery and silver retailer with premises in Prince's Street, Edinburgh.
