A Victorian silver and enamel vesta case, mark of Sampson Mordan, London 1885, of rectangular form, the front with a black and white enamelled scene of a horse race interrupted by a dog being chased by a policeman, part marked spring loaded cover, strike to the base, verso with personal engraving, gilded interior, 4.5 x 3cm, 33.9g This example appears to be one of a series of humorous sporting related scenes produced in black and white by Sampson Mordan, with other known examples relating to hunting and tennis.
