[ART] - [LITERATURE] - [POETRY]. A group of approximately 13 works, primarily autograph letters signed by poets and literary figures, including: 


1) WALPOLE, Horace (1717-1797). Autograph letter signed ("H Walpole") to an unidentified "Sir." N.p., Monday morning, 3 April 1739. 1 page, 4to, some creasing and some short tears, some minor toning and staining. Regarding a request to see the recipient.

2) [WHITTOCK, Nathaniel]. The Costumes of the Members of the University of Cambridge. L: N. Whittock, [ca 1840?]. 16mo. 23 color acquaint plates featuring figures wearing Cambridge uniforms. Contemporary red cloth stamped in blind and gilt.

3) HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel (1804-1864). Carte de visite on cardstock mount. Cambridgeport, MA: Warren's, [ca. 1859-1870]. With the signature of ("Nath. Hawthorne") in the style of Hawthorne, but later.

4) LOWELL, James Russell (1819-1891). Autograph letter signed, ("J.R. Lowell") to Oliver Dyer. Elmwood, MA, 21 November 1889. 3 pages, 4to, on a bifolium, creased and slight soiling. Lowell, as a diplomat and poet, writes to Dyer, the noted reporter and author about poetry. In part: "But to explain a poem is as ruinous as to explain a joke."

5) DREISER, Theodore (1871-1945). Epitaph a Poem. Robert Fawcett, illustrator. NY: Heron Press Incorporated, 1929. Folio. Numerous woodcuts. Original black cloth gilt, uncut and unopened (worn). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 314 of 1100 copies, on handmade Keijyo Kami. SIGNED BY DREISER on the limitation AND BY FAWCETT on frontispiece.
