Item Details
Description
Karl Hermann Lungkwitz (Texas / Germany, 1813-1891), view of a mill (likely the upper Guenther Mill in what is now the King William neighborhood) on the San Antonio River, pencil and gouache on paper
sight: 8 x 10 in., frame: 13.5 x 15.5 in.
Provenance: A Johnson City, Texas estate
Among the most important of the early Texas artists, Karl Hermann Lungkwitz was classically trained in some of the finest art schools in Germany before emigrating with his family to America in 1850, settling in the Texas Hill Country near Fredericksburg. He then began to explore and paint these new lands around him, depicting the rural Texan landscape in the Romantic style he had acquired in the European academies. Lungkwitz would hike in the areas around the Pedernales River and Enchanted Rock, carrying his easel and canvases to capture these landmarks in person. His highly skillful technique in painting (and later, photography) has given his work a lasting legacy as the first serious pictorial record of the Texas Hill Country region.
