Description

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CASED LONGCASE CLOCK, LATE 18TH CENTURY, the striking movement with brass dial, the chapter ring signed James Moule London and enclosing seconds ring and date indicator with leafy scroll spandrels, the lunettes with painted phases of the moon; the mahogany case finely carved in a combination of classical and gothic styles, the swan neck pediment with rose paterae and central pineapple, the waist with panels of blind fret decoration, carved urns and scrolls, the door in the form of a gothic arch. Late eighteenth century.

Provenance: From a collection of furniture and antiques left to the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB ) in 1939 by Evelyn Stannus of Kensington. Items in the collection are believed to have come from Ireland. Since 1939 many objects from the collection have been on loan to the National Trust and this item has been displayed at Montacute House.
