Description
Dutch (Joure). Circa 1675. Wrought iron works. From Joure, Netherlands. Time and strike. This clock is correct to the Joure area in the province of Friesland, Netherlands.The movement was built shortly after the invention of the pendulum in 1657 but before the strap-frame Tower clocks of the 1700s. The birdcage frame was built for the clock after it was unfastened from the building structure. The movement originally had an hour hand only (two are included). The time-side wind-up is is by four-handle ratchet wheel. The strike side is wound by by sliding the crank into a gear reduction wheel. Verge escapement, arbor pivots and flags are forged iron and all original without breaks or repairs. Extreme dimensions: 99" x 58" x 5". Birdcage height: 89". Escape wheel: 18" diameter. Pendulum length 92". From the Gerry and late Cathy Koolen Collection.
Condition
The original red paint has been overpainted with aluminum paint. Correct and original pendulum. The wrought iron works are original. Requires strike lever.
