Description
Plaza Alvaredo, Texas, 1925, oil on board, 12 x 18, signed lower left: E.T. Thompson 1925; titled lower right: Plaza Alvarado Texas, Thompson was born in Alvarado, Texas, and attended Texas Christian University in the mid-1920s. In 1927, she exhibited at the Annual Texas Artists Exhibition in Fort Worth. Thompson’s work is known for depicting Texas landscapes and locations within her hometown, of which she was very proud. Alvarado was established in 1849 and is the oldest town in Johnson County, named for Alvaredo, Vera Cruz, Mexico, the site of a significant battle in the Mexican War. The Plaza Alvarado is the historical downtown square, currently in the same condition and used for the town’s public gatherings. Thompson’s style is reminiscent of other American social realist painters, like Edward Hopper (1882-1967), particularly the storefronts seen behind the plaza, with pristine walkways and marked absence of activity.
