Description

One of the earliest letters known to exist from the Breckinridge, Colorado Territory area. The letter is dated 1861, one year after the post office was established in the town of 100 people. Originally spelled Breckinridge, after one time vice president John Breckinridge under James Buchanan, it was changed in 1861 to Breckenridge in 1861, after the former VP became an officer in the Confederate Army.
