Description
This lot is a unique pairing of two mining artifacts from one of the most obscure mining districts in Nevada, and at the time was one of the remotest in the United States, located in east-central Nevada. At the time, there was essentially nothing for about 100 miles (Austin). Two rare pieces from the Pah Ranagat Mining District: 1) Certificate No. 522 for 500 shares issued to James Nelson on January 26th, 1870. The district was discovered in 1865. A rush ensued because of its remote location between Austin, a silver camp, and a few of the Utah silver camps. Originally part of Nye County, it became part of Lincoln County in 1866. About a year later, silver was discovered in Pioche, and the camp vacated for the new mining camp, which became an immediate longer term success. The Hyko Silver Mining Co. incorporated in New York in 1869; Capitalized at $7,500,000; 750,000 shares at $10 per. Ornate design with black on green. A vignette of the Capitol building in Washington D.C. on right and allegorical women of liberty at right. A 25 cent brown Internal Revenue stamp is cancelled by the company secretary. Signed by President, H. S. Terbill and Secretary, William D. Harris. This may be the only known example of this certificate. Hyko was the county seat of Lincoln County from 1867 to 1871 and a few hundred residents lived nearby. 2) The second piece is the well-known, pictorial mining (first mill product) piece from Hyko! This specimen appears uncirculated and is possibly the finest known. 1867 medal celebrating the first product by mill process in the Pah Ranagat. We have had several over the years, but this is the finest we have seen. Obverse: Mine buildings at center. F. Prentice Mining 26 Pine St. around. *New York* below. Reverse& #8239;:First Product/ by/ Mill Process/ Pah Ranagat/ Mining District/ Nevada/ Jany. 1867. Silver; round; 32 mm. Pahranagat is spelled a number of different ways throughout history. Nevada
