JANETTE BECKMAN (1959 - )
RUN DMC 1988 PIONEERS OF HIP HOP Contact Sheet (Black Border).

Color screenprint on 2 Ply Museum Board, 2017. 810x711 mm; 34¼x28 inches, full margins. Printer's proof, aside from an edition of 10. Signed and inscribed "PP" in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by Gary Lichtenstein Editions, North Adams, MA.

Londoner Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for the magazines The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands from The Clash to Boy George, as well as three Police album covers. Moving to New York in 1982, Beckman was drawn to the underground hip hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Grandmaster Flash and Big Daddy Kane are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Museum of the City of New York.

Janette Beckman is a pioneer in the world of visionary collaboration as is evident in her vast photographic portfolio of artists, most of whom are now legends in their respective industries. Beckman’s screenprints offer a historic view of moments in time for a number of musicians and bands; each work tells a story and Beckman’s interpretations are, found on each, in her own, unmistakable handwriting. Beckman lives and works in New York City. She is the photographer behind the I VOTE BECAUSE campaign, launched by PROOF: Media for Social Justice in 2018. Bio courtesy of the artist's gallery.
