Watercolor on wove paper, 1978. 254x355 mm; 10x14 inches. Signed in watercolor, lower right.
Provenance: gift from the artist, Vickie Seitchik Goldstein, Philadelphia; thence by descent, private collection.
Vickie Goldstein's partner was Harry Kulkowitz, the founder and director of Kenmore Galleries in Philadelphia, who gave Barkley Hendricks his first solo exhibition in 1970. Hendricks exhibited with Kenmore Galleries through 1973, but Harry and Vickie remained lifelong friends of the artist.
This beach scene is an early example of Hendricks' work in watercolor. In 1979, Hendricks had his first solo exhibition of watercolors at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT.
