Item Details
Description
Thomas Leech & Co., also known as the Memphis Novelty Works is best known for the manufacture of sabers during the Civil War, but they also produced knives under the supervision of Charles Rigdon. When Memphis fell to the Union early in the war, Rigdon relocated to Columbus, Mississippi in March, 1862, and changed the firm’s name to Leech & Rigdon. This immense clip point bowie knife features a blade that measures approximately 14 - 3/4" with an overall length of 19 - 3/4". The blade width at the ricasso is 1 - 1/2". The knife features a sword style hilt with an S-shaped guard and a leather wrapped wood grip that is wrapped with single strands of brass wire. Capped with a sword pommel that was made from the same molds which were used for swords, but were specifically cast for knives. Age toning and a pleasing patina noted throughout, with a dark blade that exhibits edge wear and pitting. S-guard wobbles slightly and exhibits a pleasing patina that matches the pommel. Areas of leather loss to grip with tight wire that has darkened nicely. Some wire separation near pommel. A seldom encountered rebel blade with a menacing appearance. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 14 - 3/4" Overall Length: 19 - 3/4"
