Exceptional parts kit of an ERMA (ayf) MP-43 manufactured in 1944 machine gun. Receiver is cut several times with a significant piece of receiver not present. Remainder is marked “ayf” (ERMA) on receiver forward of the magazine housing. Sheet metal stamped receiver manufactured by “cos” (Mertzwerke), which was a sub-contracter who supplied parts for many German weapons. “ayf” also visible in sling recess of buttstock, with hand-scratched “TEMP” (probably the G.I. who brought the gun back). Visible numbers are matching on magazine well (8351i), operating piston (8351), pistol grip assembly (8351), and buttstock hardware (351). Bolt is non-matching (6519). Includes one original “fxo” MP43 marked magazine. The MP44 was the first true modern “assault rifle” chambered for a shorter than standard rifle cartridge (33 mm vs 57 mm) which although less powerful than the standard 8 mm German rifle round was still very effective at medium ranges where most combat took place. This allowed the individual soldier to carry plenty of ammunition in 30-round magazines so that the rifle could be effective in close-quarters combat as well. Capable of both semi-automatic and fully-automatic fire with the pressing of a switch at the side of the receiver this first modern "assault rifle" could fill the role of a deliberate aimed fire weapon, as well as that of a suppressing fire weapon. This rifle was constructed of metal stampings to the maximum extent possible to save production time and cost. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original finish turning a brown and gray patina. Internals are extremely fine. Original wood grips and buttstock are fine, showing light bruises and handling marks. Hardware at top rear of stock slightly buckled upward. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt is early type without cut-out at extractor and extremely fine. This is about as nice a parts set as this cataloger has ever seen of one of these guns. No doubt the competition for this lot will be fierce on auction day. ERMA produced guns do not surface for sale very often, and this kit would make a very attractive display piece or re-work into a semi-auto. JWK 2024-05-135.
