Pendentif religieux en émail, deuxième moitié XVIIe siècle

A religious enamelled pendant, second half 17th century
Attributed to Giuseppe Bruno, Messina, Sicily, of oval shape, the front showing Maria and Child surrounded by a choir of angels over an Italianate landscape with a large two-handled metal vase holding a crescent of flowering roses, the reverse with a similar landscape and vase in blue, holding an elaborate bocage of flowers enclosing three framed flower-cartouches each enclosing Saint John the Baptist, Saint Christopher and Saint Anthony of Padua, in its slightly later leather case, 5cm high, 4cm wide, (minor wear and retouching)

The symbolism of the rose branch sprouting from a vase likely alludes to a famous biblical passage from the Old Testament: Isaiah 11:1 1, 'And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots'.
