Notes & Literature: The Albany Institute of History & Art is one of the oldest museums in the United States. It was founded in 1791 as the Society for the Promotion of Agriculture, Arts, and Manufactures. The society's original purpose was to promote economic development in New York State, but it soon began to collect art and artifacts as well. In 1824, the society changed its name to the Albany Institute.
The Albany Institute's collection grew rapidly in the 19th century. The museum acquired paintings by major American artists such as Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, as well as artifacts from the region's Native American, Dutch, and African American communities. In 1900, the Albany Institute moved to its current location on Washington Avenue.
