Extremely Rare. Dean Phipps was a chain of department stores in the United States that operated from 1912 to 2006. The company was founded by Dean Phipps, a former employee of Kaufmann's department store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The first Dean Phipps store opened in 1912 in the city's Oakland neighborhood. The company quickly expanded, opening stores in other parts of Pittsburgh and in neighboring states. By the 1960s, Dean Phipps was one of the largest department store chains in the United States.

In the 1970s, Dean Phipps began to face increasing competition from national department store chains such as Macy's and JCPenney. The company also struggled to keep up with the changing retail landscape, as consumers began to shop at discount stores and specialty retailers. In 1985, Dean Phipps was acquired by The May Department Stores Company.

The May Company operated Dean Phipps as a subsidiary for several years. However, the company continued to struggle financially. In 2006, May announced that it would close all of the Dean Phipps stores. The last Dean Phipps store closed on February 25, 2006.

The Dean Phipps stores were known for their wide selection of merchandise and their customer service. The company was also a pioneer in the use of advertising and marketing. Dean Phipps was one of the first department stores to use television advertising, and it was also one of the first to offer a loyalty program.

The Dean Phipps stores were an important part of the retail landscape in the United States for many years. The company's closure was a significant event in the history of American retail.
