Titan's Model
Titian (Tiziano Vecelli) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno. During his lifetime he was often called da Cadore, 'from Cadore', taken from his native region.
Recognized by his contemporaries as "The Sun Amidst Small Stars" (recalling the final line of Dante's Paradiso), Titian was one of the most versatile of Italian painters, equally adept with portraits, landscape backgrounds, and mythological and religious subjects.
Titian's early training was in the workshop of his uncle, Gregorio Vecelli, a minor painter. In 1506, he moved to Venice to study with Giovanni Bellini, the leading painter of the city. Titian quickly surpassed his master, and by the early 1510s, he was one of the most sought-after painters in Venice.
Titian's early works are characterized by their rich colors and their use of light and shadow. He was particularly interested in the human figure, and his portraits are some of the most expressive and lifelike of the Renaissance.
In the 1520s, Titian began to experiment with new styles and techniques. He developed a looser, more painterly brushstroke, and he began to use color in a more expressive way. His paintings from this period are characterized by their boldness and their sensuality.Titian's later works are some of his most famous. In the 1530s, he painted a series of portraits of the Emperor Charles V, which are considered to be among the greatest portraits ever made. He also painted a series of mythological paintings, including "The Bacchanal of the Andrians" and "Danae".
Titian died in Venice in 1576. He was one of the most important and influential painters of the Renaissance, and his work continues to be admired today.
