Fargo is a 1996 comedy crime film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare. A down-and-out car salesman hires two bumbling hit men to kidnap his wife so he can collect a ransom from her wealthy family. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, the Coen brothers won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and McDormand won the Best Actress Academy Award. Additionally, Joel Coen won Best Direction at the BAFTAs. The Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
