Herbert Brenon directed Beau Geste, the 1926 silent film based on the 1924 novel of the same name. It stars Ronald Colman as Major dr Beaujolais, who leads a French Foreign Legion battalion over the Sahara desert to save a fort. A priceless, stolen family jewel is at the heart of this war story. Beau Geste was honored with Photoplay magazine's Photoplay Medal of Honor award, one of the first awards in the movie industry that recognized Hollywood's best picture of the year three years before the Academy Awards began in 1929.
