Description
Copeland Caneware Game Pie Tureen with Liner circa 19th century. Impressed Copeland mark on base of oval body. Dish and lid decorated with vines, leaves and nesting quail. Small chip on base of dish and slight cracking under nesting quail, relative wear and tear. Liner is sturdy with light wear and tear. Tureen Height: 4.25" with quail. Width: 5". Length: 7". Liner Height: 2.25". Width: 3.25". Length: 5.25". When flour became scarce in the mid 19th Century after the Napoleonic period so Copeland along with others made these stoneware dishes to resemble the color and design of pastry. This could then be served with the usual pie contents such as game in the inner dish.
