Provenance: Estate of Charles Christopher Soufas, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Equally adept at painting, graphic art and set design, the Madrid-born Arroyo originally trained as a journalist. Shortly after graduation, and in response to the then tumultuous political environment of Spain, the 21-year-old emigrated to Paris. He soon immersed himself in the flourishing artistic community, befriending such artist as Gilles Aillaud and Joan Miro. Initially working as a writer, he soon turned to art, having his first major exhibition in 1964.
Arroyo was a 1982 recipient of the prestigious Premio Nacional de Artes Plasticas, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport. He has exhibited widely, including le Centre Pompidou, Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Valencia.
