Robert E. Coontz (1864-1935) Admiral. Coontz sailed with the Great White Fleet and served as the second Chief of Naval Operations. After his four years in that office, Admiral Coontz became Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet and later Commandant, Fifth Naval District. 8 ½” x 11” typed letter signed, Bremerton, Washington, October 29, 1934, to “My dear Mrs. Merritt.” “…I had the misfortune to brak a toe in my left foot…I am way behind in everything…I am thoroughly in sympathy with your desire to put the boy in this school…I will…write you again and answer your questions….”
