It is a set design for a play called Victoria Regina. An original gallery label from New York is adhered to reverse. Whistler was an important fine artist as well as designer of sets for plays. These set designs are highly desirable to collectors. One was sold in 2008 by Christie's for $13,839, and a very sketchy set design from the same play Victoria Regina sold in 2023 at Alex Cooper's for $2750 (both Hammer prices).
