Description
Michael Thonet for Gebrüder Thonet 1884Tilting chaise-longue (Schaukel-sofa or rocker-bed) nº 7500Manufactured by Gebruder Thonet in Vienna around 1884.Made of steam-bent beech wood and Vienna grid. Measurements 100 x 64.5 x 177 cmThe rocking chair No. 7500 with and without arm rests is one of the most elegant developments in the area of bentwood furniture. Initially it was made without armrests, but with them from 1876 onwards.Itwas shown in an illustration for the World Exhibition in Philadelphia. Presumably it was one of August Thonet’s designs. After 1879 the model without armrests was no longer offered.Experts consider this rocking chair one of the most ingenious designs of the Thonet company, with a level of comfort and elegance that couldn’t be beaten. The ease of the swinging side elements conveyssomething, just by looking at it, of the feeling of the swinging motion that the user experiences. The rocking chair was only produced in relatively small numbers. Series production was ceasedin 1914 and the last piece was made in 1921. Whilst in all Thonet factories from 1861 until 1914, approximately 693,000 rocking chair itemswere made, the total number of rocking chairsNo. 7500 produced only amounted to 8,000. This explains why they are some of the most desired collector’s pieces today.
