Washington was inaugurated on 30 April 1789 but formally moved to the first official residence of the President of the United States on 23 April. The Samuel Osgood House, also known as the Walter Franklin House, housed Washington, his family, and household staff until 23 February 1790, during New York’s two-year term as the national capital.
