African Kirdi Cache-Sex Apron, Cameroon and a South African Beaded Purse. Size: 1) 6.5'' x 21'', 17 x 53 cm ; 2) 7.5'' x 7'', 19 x 18 cm. A Kirdi people cache-sex from the Mandala mountains, Cameroon. They are made of glass beads, cowry shells, cotton thread. Made in geometric patterns formed by brightly colored beads often sharing designs from other neighboring peoples. The garment is worn on special occasions such as weddings. The Kirdi live in small farming communities and are known for their garments of personal adornment. Beadwork has always been a popular practice among the Indigenous people of South Africa. Before the introduction of imported European glass beads in the 19th century, they would use bone, seeds, shells, ivory, and other natural resources. Glass beads were strung together using a needle and cotton thread to make belts, ornaments, and bags such as this piece.Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
