Item Details
Description
Several of lots 504 through 527 are part of a group of Russian items consigned by a prominent Cincinnati family. All may have been purchased from the Armand Hammer Sale of Imperial Russian items held at Marshall Field & Company in Chicago in July of 1933. Many have documentation from the Hammer Collection. Others do not but the all reportedly came from the Hammer Sale. Fine Russian silver cloisonné St. Petersburg Icon triptych, formerly the property of the Czar of Russia. The open arched center reveals a painting of the Resurrection of Christ with a Guardian Angel and two frightened guardsmen in attendance. This painting bears the artist signature Ñ no in gold. The flanking wing doors each display the full figure of a Guardian Angel. The gold wash silver is impressed with the St. Petersburg symbol and 88 standards, the Cyrillic name for G. Grachev and the initials AP in Cyrillic. The paintings have a wonderful glassy surface that became a lost art. Height 6 inches by 3 1/2 inches with wings closed, open measurement is 6 5/8 inches. Heavily enameled case on the front and back and enameling surrounds each of the paintings. Adjustable leveler feet. A small hinge spool is absent. The triptych comes with a fitted burl wood easel back case lined in velvet and silk and bears the Double Eagle symbol and Grachev name impressed in gold. Typed auction tag reads “Russian Enamel on Silver washed in Gold. Triptych of the Resurrection, formerly the Property of the Czar of Russia”. Excellent beautiful condition.
