Item Details
Description
Western Europe, England, London, ca. late 19th / early 20th century CE. A hefty brass and steel surveying tool known as a theodolite, made by Horne and Thornthwaite of London. The eye piece and lens are adjustable, and the telescope rotates on an axis, with vertical discs to the sides with vernier scale measurements. There are a pair of bubble levels on the base and threaded brass knobs for securing the instrument to a stable surface. The brass lens cap is attached and most parts and knobs will swivel, articulate, and / or rotate, and the bubble levels seem to function. The theodolite, invented in the 16th century, is a precise surveying instrument used to measure horizontal and vertical angles to determine distances and angles. This instrument is vital in tasks such as land surveying, mapping, construction layout, and navigation. Size: 10.25" L x 6.75" W x 10.5" H (26 cm x 17.1 cm x 26.7 cm)
