Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A stunning necklace comprised of 60 ancient beads made from gold (59.84% to 69.74%, equivalent to 14K+), carnelian, and glass. The gold beads are formed from thin sheets into a variety of shapes; spirals, spheres, discs, and lozenge. The gold and carnelian beads are symmetrically strung on both sides for a pleasing and balanced design. The lower portion of the strand, above the pendant area, features four blue and two black glass beads, and a large hollow gold sphere. The pendant bead is a flat disc with a raised spiral motif. This elegant necklace is wearable and strung in modern times on a black fiber cord. Size of necklace: 26" L (66 cm); disc pendant: 26" L x .625" W (66 cm x 1.6 cm); gold quality: 59.84% to 69.74%, equivalent to 14K+ (the precious metal composition also including 23.35% to 29.86% silver); total weight: 17 grams

Provenance: private New York City, New York USA collection, acquired by late father in the 1960s and 1970s some earlier and were in his estate as part of his collection

Indentations and perforations to gold balls and slight bending and nicks to other gold beads. Pitting and minor nicks to stone and glass surfaces. Strung in modern times on a modern cord to be wearable.
