Lot Essay
Small jade bi discs the size of the present examples were not only used as an embellishment, they were also considered to be an indicator of status during the Warring States period (476-221.BC). According to “The Rites of Zhou”: “A viscount carries a jade bi with grain motifs, and a baron carries a jade bi with pu motifs.” For a similar but slightly earlier example jade bi disc with grain pattern in the collection of the Taipei Palace Museum, dated 570-476 B.C. see accession number: 購玉000478N000000000.
