WOOD, Robert. Les Ruines de Palmyre, autrement dite Tedmor, au Desert. Londres, A. Millar, 1753In-folio, mm. 530x370 mm. Legatura posteriore in mezza bazzana verde, titoli e ornamenti in oro al dorso a 6 nervi. Tagli rossi. Pp. Millard: “a dispassionate and accurate survey of the architecture of antiquity; it wrested the lead in such matters from the French, and initiated a series of archaeological works that came to characterize the activities of both connoisseurs and architects in England in the second half of the eighteenth century”.Kat. 1884; Blackmer 1834; Fowler 443; Harris 939; Millard (British Books), 92; RIBA 3707.

First French edition of this important work on the discovery of the Tedmor city of Palmyra.Wood, accompanied by James Dawkins, John Bouverie, and the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Borra, traveled extensively in the Levant, reaching the relatively little-visited sites of Palmyra and Balbec in 1751. The ruins of Palmyra appeared first; the work and publication costs delayed publication of the Balbec ruins until 1757. Dawkins produced the official account of the tour, while Wood handled the topography and inscriptions. Walpole praised Wood's work, and the plates of these unknown sites, mainly by Fourdrinier and Major after Giovanni Battista Borra, became an important source of architecture.Millard: “a dispassionate and accurate survey of the architecture of antiquity; it wrested the lead in such matters from the French, and initiated a series of archaeological works that came to characterize the activities of both connoisseurs and architects in England in the second half of the eighteenth century”.
