Ancient Egypt, late Third Intermediate Period, 25th Dynasty, ca. 744 to 656 BCE. A cast-bronze figure depicting a priestess known as a Divine Adoratrice. The woman presents in an ankle-length sheath dress and broad collar, holding a menat offering in her left hand, and extending her right arm out in a gesture of adoration. The role of Divine Adoratrice was one of power and prestige, myriad temple duties, and lifelong celibacy, however her influence over much of the Egyptian political landscape was undeniable. Her primary charge was to oversee the transfer of power from one pharaoh to the next, typically as his daughter, and was also a manager of his consorts.
