Description
Fine Unusual Bidjar Halvai
306 x 218 cm (10' x 7' 2")
Persia, second half 19th century or before
Condition: very good, mostly good pile, minor small repairs, one small stain in the red field on the left
Warp: cotton, weft: cotton, pile: wool
A wonderful fine and expressive carpet. Bidjar carpets are known for sturdy construction and elegant designs. This carpet is finely woven with wonderful natural colors and in good condition. The powerful medallion dominates the rug.
Heart shaped pendants just about pierce the border on top and bottom whilst on the sides they even overlap the first two borders and therefore enhance the domineering effect.
Underneath we find a flowering garden in which one rose bush is placed in all four corners of the field. Another singular feature is the drawn in corners of the inner guard stripe. This allows a generous solution for the corners of the main border and has a slightly European look.
The same inner borders frame the main border outside. This is followed by a reciprocal tree foil strip in the same red as the field. A very special feature of the field is the secondary deconstructed medallion of which only a scrolling vine is shown.
As it is just floating on the red field it opens the composition. A beautiful carpet for a confident household.
