Biography: In 1896 Leo von Konig made his debut at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In that year he became a member of the Munich Secession, and in 1902 he joined the Berlin Secession. Like Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann, Leo von Konig soon considered the artists' association to be in need of reform and in 1910 called for a "free association, free artists, free words". Since his proposals were radically rejected by the board, he resigned. This decision made a decisive contribution to the founding of the "New Secession". In the encounter with the works of El Greco and Goya, von gradually developed stylistically from Impressionism to Expressionism. In the "Third Reich" this stylistic development brought him close to "degenerate" art. He was banned from painting and exhibiting.
