As finance minister in the reign of Henry IV, Sully introduced many reforms and removed many abuses of tax-collecting, managing to save between 1600 and 1610 an average of a million livres a year.
Sully also served as grand commissioner of public works, superintendent of fortifications and grand master of artillery, in addition to being appointed governor of Mantes and of Jargau. He negotiated the treaty of peace in 1602 and the following year represented Henry at the court of James I of England.
Appended here is an account of the trial of Ravaillac for the murder of Henry the Great.
