A cotton or linen and silk needlepoint sampler with several styles of the alphabet and the name Sarah Reid, with her date of birth and the year she completed the needlepoint in 1829. The embroidery demonstrated a girl's domestic skills and her education; needlepoint was a common part of 18th & 19th century American curriculum for girls and completed pieces might be presented to parents as gifts and used as decoration in the home. Size of needlepoint: 14.5" L x 15" W (36.8 cm x 38.1 cm); frame: 16" L x 16.75" W (40.6 cm x 42.5 cm)
