Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak culture, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful and ornate "Mandau" sword handle that is hand-carved from deer antler with a braided rattan grip, and above is a spur projecting at a right angle from the main handle. The spur crook is carved with a humanoid face that acted as a protective spirit with additional swirling and spiraling shapes; the hollow holes were for inserting decorative hair tassels. The cylindrical tip is mounted on a display stand where the steel blade was originally hafted to, and remains of resin coats this area. Size: 6.5" L x 3" W (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm); 9.25" H (23.5 cm) included custom stand.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-Ami Brown collection, New York City, USA, 1950 to 1970

Condition
Original resin coating below rattan grip is flaking and delicate. Stable pressure fissures to antler. Dark patina and mineral deposits from age. Overall nice antique condition.
