Item Details
Description
"White Stallion of Lipizza" by Marguerite Henry, art by Wesley Dennis, published by Rand McNally, 1964. First Edition, stated Second Printing, November 1964 [1st printing was the same month].

A young boy named Hans dreams of one day working with the famed stallions of Lipizza. But coming from a family of bakers, Hans is discouraged from ever becoming a rider. That is, until the day he is invited to watch the extraordinary Ballet of Lipizzaners-- from the Imperial Box!-- and his life is changed forever.

Marguerite Henry artfully includes authentic details about the skillful training of both horse and rider as she weaves the story of Hans and his beloved Lipizzan stallion, Borina. The brilliance of Hans’s dazzling public performances and his devotion to the art of classical riding make this story uniquely rich in history and horsemanship—a tale to be treasured by horse lovers of all ages.

Marguerite Henry (1902-1997) was an American writer of children's books, writing fifty-nine books based on true stories of horses and other animals. She won the Newbery Medal for King of the Wind, a 1948 book about horses, and she was a runner-up for two others. One of the latter, Misty of Chincoteague, was the basis for several related titles and the 1961 movie Misty.

John Wesley Dennis (1903-1966) was an American illustrator, known best for fifteen children's books about horses that he created in collaboration with writer Marguerite Henry. He illustrated over 150 books in his lifetime, including Anna Sewell's "Black Beauty" and John Steinbeck's "The Red Pony". He also wrote and illustrated a few books of his own, among which are "Flip", "Flip and the Cows", "Flip and the Morning", and "Tumble".
