Description
c1870 American cotton fabric printed with scenes on the theme of labor rights and capitalism. Four vignettes are shown amidst garlands of fruit and flowers, (these vignettes woule repeat on a larger length of fabric.). They are "Honor to the Iron Worker", with a healthy looking laboring man seated on an anvil overlooking a factory. "After Work, the Happy Home" shows a domestic scene in a tidy home, the mother setting the table and the father dandling one of the two small children on his knee, with toys and a cat about. "The Two Powers in Accord" shows a workman with "Labor" on his cap and a well dressed gentleman with "Capital" on his top hat, the two shaking hands over a train. The fourth image is captioned "Labor is Honorable" and shows a clean and, for 1870, modern factory with workers streaming in. A fascinating artifact from the early US labor movement. The only other sample of this fabric we have found so far is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Framed. Frame, approx. 20 1/2" x 16". Provenance: the estate of John Long, highly regarded Virginia antiques dealer and collector.
