Honanie honors the Hopi culture by creating carvings of the old style, by painting them with more natural colors, and by using cottonwood root he gathers from the San Juan River in southern Utah. He has won several awards for his exceptional style, one of those being Blue Ribbons at the Sante Fe Indian Market. He started to learn about carving at the age of seventeen by watching elders and with self-teaching. He has entered his work in several exhibitions in New Mexico and Arizona. With a Kachina adorned in beautiful pigments of red, green, browns, white and black the artist achieves his goal of honoring the Hopi culture with more of a natural look.
