Description
French giltwood bed frame in the Louis XVI taste, 19th century, having a tufted headboard with scrolled and foliate garland crest and 'LB" cipher cartouche flanked by arrow filled quiver posts, fluted side rails and low foot board, and rising on acanthus toupie feet, apparently unmarked.
Provenance: Originally sold Trosby Galleries, Palm Beach, Florida, From The Villa Ospo collection, lot 35, January 12-14, 1965.
Note: The Villa Ospo is located on Jekyll Island, Georgia, and was designed by John Russell Pope, architect of the Jefferson Memorial, for former Standard Oil director Walter Jennings as a winter home in 1927. In 1955 Dewey and Grace Scan Atlanta developer and his wife acquired the property through a long term lease. They renovated the property, filling the residence with furnishings from the shops of New Orleans including a bed having a history of belonging to Marie Louise, second wife of Napoleon. Today the residence houses the offices of the Jekyll Island authority.

Chips to finish with gold overpaint, wear, discolorations, tears, stains, etc. to upholstery, some losses of carving to crest with damaged/detached floral garland, one 'L' bracket for slats lacking, footboard with loose mortise joint - structural integrity not guaranteed, wear to feet.
