(Folio) 31x24 cm (12¼x9½"), early full red morocco elaborately gilt, rebacked, raised bands, gilt floriate inners, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First Edition.Account of the history of the territory comprising Rajasthan, generally corresponding to the territory of the present-day Indian state, scarcely understood by Europeans prior to Tod's account. James Tod initially came to the region as a cadet in the Bengal Army, later serving in diplomatic capacities to bring the region under control of the East India company. During his tenure, he was known for being sympathetic to the Rajput princes, so much so that his fellow British officers grew suspicious of him and eventually pushed him out of his role. Moderate rubbing and soiling to binding and gilt edges, corners bumped with some related creasing to leaves; initial leaves chipped with some loss, occasional foxing, light plate offsetting; large map with edgewear and creasing, reinforced at versos of most folds, detached from volume; very good.
