Description: 3 volumes. Woodblock illustrations in black and grey throughout, on double leaves. 22.5x16 cm (9x6¼"), stab-bound colored paper wrappers, volumes 1 & 2 with paper labels. First Edition, second impression for volume one; First Edition, third impression for volume two; later impression of volume three.High point in Japanese woodblock illustration by Hokusai, artist of the masterpiece, The Great Wave. Volumes 1 and 2 are the first impressions following the so-called "Falcon Feather" true first editions according to Matthi Forrer, and thus are the first impressions done by the Eirakuya. The impressions in these copies are remarkably dark and sharp. Terminal advertisement leaves in volumes 1 and 2, corresponding to those identified as "31" by Forrer. These can be dated likely to the mid-1840s. The third volume is a later impression but before the Meiji 10 edition, likely from the 1860s or early 1870s (late Edo or early Meiji); the impressions are acceptable but less sharp, and there is no advertisement leaf, but there are no pink blocks as in later editions.

Covers with light wear, spotting to volume 1; some gentle toning mostly affecting edges, loss to bottom half of title-page in volume 1, worming affecting ad. sheet in volume 2 and one hole throughout not affecting image; a notably well-preserved set, near fine.
