Description
An antique Italian bronze sculpture of Silenus by Chiurazzi of Naples. Crafted after the original statue discovered at Pompeii. In Greek mythology, Silenus was a companion and tutor to Dionysus, the God of Wine and festivals.The figure is shown on a circular plinth decorated with a repetitive pattern of swirls. Silenus is shown looking down with a garland of grapes and leaves in his hair. From the top of his left hand is a snake, bearing its teeth, poised, this meets a circular frame with three protruding palmate designed supports, with curled lips, probably to support a bowl. Marked.
