Lively modelled as a duck standing on a flat base, the head turned towards the left, with round eyes and long beak, covered overall in a rich mottled milky-blue and black glaze thinning to mushroom at the edges save for the eyes, beak, and feet glazed rust-brown.

Provenance: The collection of Paul Whitfield, thence by descent. Paul Whitfield (1942-2018) was a British auctioneer and collector. He was the son of the poet and writer Christopher Whitfield, an early friend of studio potter Michael Cardew in the 1920s, and subsequent stalwart supporter of the romantic artist and etcher F. L. Griggs. He began his auction career at Christie's in 1965 working in a variety of fields including furniture, carpets, bronzes, sculpture and a wide range of decorative objects. At Christies where he was ultimately Managing Director, he was most notably responsible in establishing their South Kensington rooms. He worked subsequently for Bonhams, Sotheby's, and Phillips, employing an encyclopedic appreciation of the beautiful, also reflected in his own collections of art and objects. Whitfield was a keen collector and especially passionate about bronzes, furniture, ceramics, and modern British art, which he collected in his home in the Cotswolds. After retiring, he supported various museums in the Cotswolds, including as a trustee of the Guild of Handicraft Trust and the Court Barn Museum, and loaned pieces of his collection to the Winchcombe Archive Collection.
Condition: Wear and firing flaws. The duck appears to have an old professionally repaired break across the center, with associated hairline cracks and minor losses.
