AN MONUMENTAL SILVER AND BRONZE-GILT GROUP OF SHAKYAMUNI
This magnificent sculpture elegantly depicts the moment at which Buddha Shakyamuni achieves enlightenment. Faced with the threats and temptations of Mara, Buddha overcomes all and touches a single finger to the Earth so that She may bear witness to his achievement. Seated in dhyanasana with his hands in bhumisparshamudra, clad in a diaphanous sanghati with elegantly falling folds, the face with full lips and almond-shaped eyes centered by a spiraling urna, the hair in curls over the ushnisha and topped with a knop, accompanied with an elaborated shrine.
