Description
Obverse signed by Thomas Pingo (1714-1776), an English medalist who was employed as assistant-engraver at the Royal Mint in London from 1771 to 1776. The obverse design commemorates Anson's defeat of the French fleet led by Admiral de la Jonquiere off Cape Finisterre in May 1747. Anson was promoted to Vice Admiral following his victory. The reverse celebrates his voyage around the world, from September 1740 until June 1744. Anson later built a town in North Carolina, Ansonburg, and the county of Anson is named for him.
