Description: Large Louis Aston Knight oil-on-canvas painting of a water mill. Signed “Aston Knight, Paris” in the lower left-hand corner. This painting is fresh to market, having never been in a dealer’s hands since the 1950’s and is both an exceptional piece, as well as an exceptionally rare and never-publicly-displayed artwork. A French-Born American Artist, Knight is noted for his paintings of quaint landscapes, his favorite subjects being cottages, mills, and gardens in the towns surrounding his hoe in Beaumont-le-Roger, and is most noted for his skill in portraying the reflections and movements of water. The son of Daniel Ridgway Knight, another renowned American painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Louis surpassed his father’s reputation gradually over his lifetime, but never more so than when one of his most famous artworks, The Afterglow, was purchased by sitting-U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1922 to hang in the White House, and he later held a private exhibition at the White House for Calvin Coolidge during his Presidency.
